Library Orientation Tours

The library conducts orientation tours for new and returning students. These class tours provide:

• An overview of the services and facilities provided by TAFE NSW Sydney Institute Library.
• Basic instruction on the use of the library catalogue tailored to the study area of each tour group.
• Audio and virtual tours are also available for viewing or downloading with captions for the hearing impaired and in the following languages: Arabic, Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Korean.

Internet Training

Basic and advanced Internet training sessions which cover the following topics are available:

• search strategies
• metasearch engines
• subject directories
• hidden or deep web for more advanced research needs.

Class sessions

Teaching staff may book Internet workshops for students. For bookings ring 9217 3317.

Self-Booked Student Sessions

Students may also book themselves in for a generic basic or advanced Internet training session. These sessions are held regularly throughout the term.

Library Workshops

Workshops designed to enhance information seeking skills are available throughout the term. These workshops are tailored to all subject areas and information needs and include:

• Information literacy workshops
  Librarians assist students in defining, locating and assessing information using both printed and electronic sources.
  
  
• Referencing and plagiarism workshops
  In this workshop, students find out what plagiarism is, how best to avoid it and how to create accurate bibliographies for assignments.
  
  
• Australian Bureau of Statistics Workshop
  This workshop demonstrates the many features of the ABS website and how to locate relevant statistical and census information.
  
  
• Online subscription databases
  Assists students with identifying relevant online subscription databases for their subject area and using effective searching techniques.
