Loftus Campus leading the way in sustainability
Sutherland College, Loftus Campus Hospitality Team were the proud recipients of the Excellence Award for the Pulpmaster food waste recycling system. The award was presented at the Education Department’s Year of Learning for Sustainability Awards of Excellence ceremony that was held on 25 August.
The Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth MP, congratulated the 20 winners and Loftus Campus was very proud to be included in the top group, as there were over 100 initiatives nominated for the awards.
Ms Firth said “The types of programs we have seen emerge throughout the year have been really inspiring – our TAFEs are certainly leading the way when it comes to taking action.
This is true of the Loftus Campus Pulpmaster Project. The 'Pulpmaster 3000' has been developed by Pulpmaster Australia Pty Ltd, and works by diverting food waste from landfill (and the associated contamination of other potentially recyclable materials by putrescible waste).
Loftus Campus was the perfect trial location as the facility boasts three fully equipped commercial teaching kitchens which operate day and night classes, 6 days a week.
The meals prepared by the Hospitality students are often served in the TAFE Restaurant which operates 2-3 nights per week. The remaining meals are disposed of to general waste bins. Cathie Hilliard, Operations Manager said “This method of disposal was generating 18 cubic meters of general waste per week”.
Prior to implementing the Pulpmaster System it was estimated that over 10,000 black plastic bags used to transport this waste, were being land filled each year. Through the implementation of the Pulpmaster System, Loftus College was able to save 11, 440 plastic bags and 64 tonnes of organic waste was diverted from landfill.
There are obvious environmental benefits to the program but also occupational health and safety benefits and financial benefits. Cathie said “there was a reduction in back strain from carrying the heavy food and waste bags to the bins and a reduction in costs of buying black garbage bags”.

Fashion graduate of the year
|
Christopher at RAFW |
Christopher Dobosz, a graduate of our cutting edge Fashion Design Studio at Ultimo College has been named the 2010 Graduate Designer of the Year at the recent Brisbane Fashion Festival.
Every year each of the major Fashion Design Institutes from across Australia nominate two students for this award. The competition is incredibly tough with 12 finalists presenting their work to a panel of judges.
This is a very prestigious award in the Fashion Industry and is making 2010 an amazing year for Christopher.
Earlier this year he presented his fashions at The Innovators parade during Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. He also received a State Medal for coming top in NSW in the
Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design.
Christopher valued his time at TAFE and believes it has given him a sound foundation to succeed.
“The whole experience of studying has been incredible and I have loved it. The work load in the first year was overwhelming, and this is the way it should be, since it gives you an idea of what it would be like to work in the fashion industry. You need to be prepared for the amount of work that you need to complete and to have a strong work ethic. The teachers also give you fantastic support.”
This is the third year in a row that one of our graduates has won this award with Dion Lee winning in 2008 and Soeli Pedrozo in 2009.

“I’ll be meeting staff at a college in Toronto who deliver the Diploma of Visual Merchandising course, as well as meeting with Visual Merchandising managers in major department stores.
“In New York I’ll be having a work placement with a major retail company as well as meeting with senior staff in a number of retail companies.
“I’ll also be visiting training providers in New York who deliver high level Visual Merchandising qualifications to identify resources and the range of teaching and learning practices they employ,” Kerry said.
It should be a fantastic experience for Kerry. Sydney Institute and our students will benefit from all the extra knowledge and skills that Kerry will bring back with her.
